The drug is used to help people to stop smoking. It reduces cravings and other withdrawal effects.

You should be aware that the medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children and adolescents, who suffer from severe depression or certain other mental or mood disorders. That's why additional monitoring is advised, especially during the first few months after starting to use Zyban and after altering the dose of this drug. Inform your doctor at once, if you have noticed any of these serious side effects.

Using this medication together with other drugs or medical conditions may cause serious interactions. You must inform your doctor of all the medicines, you are taking, including over-the-counter medicine.

You are not allowed to use Zyban if you're already using bupropion to treat depression, thioridazine or taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). You may need additional monitoring if you are taking psychiatric medicines or antidepressants, some heart medicines (e.g., propafenone, flecainide), some high blood pressure medicines (e.g., \'beta-blockers\'), diabetes medicine, decongestants, levodopa, diet pills, quinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin), HIV protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir), tranquilizers, warfarin, tramadol, seizure medicines, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., acetaminophen with codeine), other products containing nicotine (e.g., patches or gum). Inform your doctor if you are taking medicines which might increase seizure risk (decrease seizure threshold) such as tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), phenothiazines (e.g., thioridazine),isoniazid (INH), or theophylline.

You must get your doctor informed beforehand in case you have any other medical conditions including allergies,any mental or mood disorders (such as bipolar disorder), diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, head injury, tumors (e.g., brain or spinal cord), history of drug or alcohol addiction, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.

You may be not allowed to use the drug if you have a history of eating disorders (e.g., anorexia, bulimia), seizures, or muscle or nerve conditions. The use of alcohol should be discussed before taking Zyban.

Take the medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Read the medication guide, which comes with the medicine, carefully. Ask your doctor in case you have any questions about Zyban. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not break, crush, or chew. If you are using more than 1 dose each day, make an interval of at least 8 hours between doses.

The drug should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture, heat and light. In case you miss a dose of the drug, do not take 2 doses at once in order to make up the missed one.

The medicine commonly starts working after a week or so. Do not stop using Zyban without checking with your doctor. You are advised to continue smoking during the first week of taking the drug. Plan to stop smoking only during the second week of taking Zyban.

You may need additional monitoring of your condition at the beginning of your treatment and when your dose is changed.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience hostility, irritability, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, agitation, severe restlessness, impulsive feelings or feelings of depression. In case you are a parent or caregiver of a patient that is using the drug, watch for these symptoms daily. Call the doctor at once if you notice any of these symptoms.

Do not drive, operate machinery or do other potentially dangerous tasks until you know what your reaction to the medication is. Zyban may cause dizziness. Using the medication with other drugs or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other tasks that need your concentration. Do not overdose. It can lead to a seizure.Limit or avoid consumption of alcohol. It can also increase your risk of seizures. Children adolescents may be more sensitive to the effects of the medication that's why caution is advised when taking this drug.

For women: Inform your doctor beforehand if you are pregnant or if you plan on becoming pregnant. Do not nurse while taking Zyban. The drug is excreted in breast milk.

In case you have any signs of an allergic reaction such as hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing, get emergency medical help immediately.

Inform your doctor at once if you have any if the following serious side effects: anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, mood or behavior changes, or if you feel aggressive, hostile, agitated, irritable, hyperactive (mentally or physically), restless, impulsive, more depressed, or have suicidal thoughts.

You must inform your doctor if you have a seizure or fast, uneven heartbeats.

Less serious side effects include: vomiting, nausea, dry mouth, constipation; headache or migraine; tremors, dizziness, confusion; appetite changes, weight gain or loss; increased sweating, mild itching or skin rash; loss of interest in sex.

Some other side effects are also possible.

If you think you have an overdose, contact your local poison control center or emergency immediately.

The common symptoms of overdose are: loss of consciousness, hallucinations, blurred vision, lightheadedness, and seizures.

Do not share the medication with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use Zyban to treat other health conditions.

Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.
